Papua New Guinea - From an Idea to a Realisation

Papua New Guinea is 'Wild', in all of its meaning. Its topography is drastic, with huge mountain ranges climbing out of the ocean, coated in thick tropical jungle and rife with exotic wildlife. A culture that had remained mostly undisturbed until WWII, and have since struggled to reach an understanding with the encroaching foreign mining companies. This is a land that is stereotypically seen as unknown, dangerous and unfit for travel. There are instances, however, you hear of a conflicting image of PNG. A place with unparalleled pristine beauty, a misunderstood people only trying to retain what is theirs and a traveller who had a trip of a lifetime.

Culture and Pristine Natural Environment

As kayakers we always looking for a new river, destination and experience. It seems our genre of adventure recreation has reached most places on earth, to the Himalayan Rivers of Tibet and Nepal, the Glacial Rivers of Norway, Iceland and Greenland, to the Central American paradise of Costa Rica and Honduras, Chile and Argentina, Far Western China, Eastern Russia, Northern Quebec, The Northern Territory of Australia, Amazonian Brazil right throughout Africa and more. Kayakers from New Zealand and all over the world seeking that river, that destination, that experience. Well Papua New Guinea is that to us.

Papua New Guinea

We plan on travelling to Papua New Guinea from April 10th until May 4th in hope of exploring its untouched rivers, immersing ourselves in the rich culture and getting a first hand experience of the real PNG. The aim of our expedition is:

"To achieve the first descent of ten class V stretches of river in the areas of the Huon Peninsula (North of Lae), the Upper Markham Tributaries and the Mountain Range behind Salamaua. We also hope to dispel the contemporary and historical stereotypes of Papua New Guinea.

Though this is an ambitious goal, it is explained in Human Motivation (D. McClelland, 1987), "the higher the goal, the better the performance". We want to achieve as much as possible in Papua New Guinea so have set a goal that is realistically achievable, but only through a lot of hard work. And to us, that is what this expedition, kayaking and adventure recreation is all about.

Keep an eye on here for updates before, during and after our trip.
Cheers Jordy, Barny and Shannon.
